August 12022

.Com prices increase at the end of next month

The wholesale cost will increase 7% on September 1.

Now would be a good time to renew .com domains in your portfolio that you want to keep.

Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN) will increase the wholesale price for .com domain names from $8.39 to $8.97 on September 1, 2022. With ICANN’s 18-cent fee, the actual price to registrars is $9.15.

Registrars add their own markup to cover payment processing fees, technology, other overhead, and profits.

Most domain investors pay $9 or less per year per domain, so you can expect your fee to jump in September.

The good news is that domains can be renewed for up to 10 years at today’s prices. So if you have domains expiring after next month that you know you want to renew, you can save money by doing it now. That would be a good idea because renewal prices will continue to rise. Verisign’s contract with ICANN allows it to increase prices by 7% again in 2023 and 2024.

In my case, I’ll renew most of next year’s domains by the end of next month, and I’ll also extend the registration for critical domains like Namenative.com.
